Bali packs beaches, volcanoes, temples and artistry into one irresistible island. A traditional flower-garland welcome sets the tone, and from a base in lively Kuta the whole island opens up - surf beaches and shopping streets on one side, rice terraces and holy mountains on the other.

Adrenaline comes first at Benoa Beach, with parasailing and banana boat rides over turquoise water, before the day mellows into sunset at the clifftop Uluwatu Temple. Inland, the road climbs to Kintamani for sweeping views across the volcano, then drops into Ubud Village, Bali's beating heart of art, craft and culture.

The island saves its most photogenic moments for last: the lakeside Bedugul Temple on Lake Beratan and the silhouette of Tanah Lot Temple floating on the sea at dusk - the image of Bali every traveller carries home.
